Outdoor Facilities Survey

Thanks to everyone who filled in our Outdoor Facilities Survey, as your responses are much appreciated. The results were close, with the Outdoor Fitness Park just beating out the tennis courts. A Committee will now move forward with the Outdoor Fitness Park, with a goal of having the Park up and running this summer.

A power point presentation showing the results of the survey is available on the VRCA website, under facilities.

We also received  27 comments.

The 27 comments and the VRCA’s Response to those comments are also available on the VRCA website, under facilities.

Additional Comments/ Suggestions

We need more outdoor facilities.

VRCA Response

The VRCA agrees that we need more outdoor facilities in our community.

Importance to the community and our personal use of a facility are two different things and made answering more difficult. For example, we will not use a skateboard park due to our age and interests but think it is important for the youth in VR. We answered on our potential use, not overall community importance.

VRCA Response

Thank you for that clarification. It will be considered in future surveys.

Tennis courts would be awesome!

VRCA Response

Tennis courts came in second, behind the outdoor fitness park in this survey. When funds are available, a tennis court could be built after the outdoor fitness park is completed.

I think the questions are not being asked correctly – even though I may never use a facility, I would still like to see it built as a recreation area for the whole community. Although some people are going to be more interested in what is currently applicable to their family, some of us think of facilities as assets for the community.

VRCA Response

Thank you for that clarification. It will be considered in future surveys.

Use funding to lower soccer fees. Skating area should be monitored so hockey doesn’t continue to take over the entire area.

VRCA Response

Soccer fees are already some of the lowest in the City, and the VRCA wants to provide facilities for more than just children. The skate rink is monitored by volunteers who do their best to remind users of the rules. All residents and users must work together to ensure the rules are being followed.

The community garden plots are an extremely important part of the community along with music in the park events. A huge garden to grow produce for shelters and under privileged Calgarians would be amazing.

VRCA Response

We have community gardens for our residents, located near the ice rink. There is also a massive urban garden just across the road (near Victory Village) that is always looking for more volunteers and produces food that goes directly to the food bank.

Pull bars for different ages from kids to adults would be very useful

VRCA Response

Pull bars for different ages will be considered in the detailed design of the Outdoor Fitness Park.

Would love to see a splash pad/park !!!

VRCA Response

This is not a possibility at this time. A splash park requires the water to be monitored several times a day to ensure algae and bacteria do not build up. As the VRCA has no paid staff, this makes monitoring a significant problem. In addition, there is not sufficient space for a splash park that also has irrigation. It was for these reasons that a splash park was not included as a possibility in this survey.  Bowness Park has completed their renovation and has a terrific splash park.  It is a close walk away, down the switch-backs.

I would actually rather see funds go towards a spray park/wading pool. I also think that a community centre might be a nice thing to think about. There just doesn’t seem to be as much friendliness between Valley Ridge and Crestmont. The things a community centre might provide could be potentially worth it.

VRCA Response

Please see above for splash park rationale. A community centre has been explored by the VRCA for several years. Unfortunately, the cost of building a centre would take 15+years of fundraising (and no further facilities) and maintaining that centre is difficult. Several communities have seen their buildings go bankrupt. This would be devastating to our community. Again, this has been explored for years by subcommittees, and anyone with further questions is welcome to email the Board for further details.

You are doing a great job.

Is there any consideration for a community association hall or facility?

VRCA Response

VRCA has considered a community association hall. However, under the current rules, VRCA does not see how we could fund a hall. The VRCA is not allowed to mortgage a building as an individual can. Please see above for more details.

Thank you to all volunteers of the VRCA! We appreciate all that you do!

Why wouldn’t we spend the money improving the soccer and baseball facilities or even permanent shelters and washrooms before adding new stuff?

VRCA Response

The soccer fields have been amended three times in the past 6 years. Permanent structures are not allowed on City Parks land. Washrooms may be a possibility, but port-o-potties are much more maintainable, due to a lack of infrastructure/community hall.

Thanks for working on this project.

VRCA Response

It seems there are some older playgrounds that would be worth fixing up before adding new facilities (on Valley Stream Circle for example).

VRCA Response

Two of those older playgrounds (Valley Stream Circle and Valley Brook Circle) are ending their lifecycle and are due to be replaced by the City in 2016. The City has all playgrounds on a lifecycle and will replace the equipment when it comes due.

The soccer fields were is bad shape last year. This is a safety concern.

VRCA Response

The soccer fields have been amended three times in the past six years. We have no control over watering of the fields, and that does affect the overall health of the grasses.

Fire pit at skate rink.

VRCA Response

This has been considered and may still be a possibility in the future.

The outdoor fitness park idea isn’t a terrible idea, but the kind that was sent out to the residents recently would only be utilized by a very small number. A more modern “adult“ play park is better for the demographics of the community where kids and adults can use the facility the synergy bluesky outdoor training system by Life Fitness would be more appropriate and keeping with the times.

VRCA Response

We will look into the Bluesky outdoor training system by Life Fitness during the detailed design stage of this project.

How were these four options decided upon?

VRCA Response

The VRCA surveyed the East and West joint-use sites. There is available land that would allow for the four options to be built.

Our ability to volunteer is always changing. So we might be able to get added to that list later. Good luck!

VRCA Response

We thank all residents for any time they have to spare to help out with community projects.
