What Your Community Association Is

Community associations are neighbourhood-based volunteer organizations providing a voice for community life, an overall sense of belonging, and social, educational and recreational opportunities for their residents such as:

  • Development Information Sessions and Open Houses
  • Community Skate Day
  • Community Garage Sale
  • Community Clean Up
  • Soccer
  • Skating Rink
  • Seasonal Skateboard Park
  • Community BBQ and Activity Day
  • Community Garden
  • Music-In-The-Park
  • And much more!

Valley Ridge continues to grow and develop into a more established community, while attempting to create and maintain facilities which many older Calgary neighborhoods have in place.Whatever your reason for moving to Valley Ridge, we all have a vested interest in maintaining a high quality of life, and from a property value standpoint, and wish to see our community continue to improve.

Community Associations come in all shapes and sizes and are dedicated to addressing local issues, opportunities and needs. About 100 of them operate community halls and related facilities. A voluntary community association membership is a great way to support your local community!

Collectively, the community association network is the largest collective volunteer movement in Calgary with more than 20,000 volunteers strong! Valley Ridge has hundreds of dedicated volunteers, selflessly contributing time and energy for the benefit of all. The rink maintenance and soccer program alone require approximately 150 volunteers.

Your Valley Ridge Community Association executive is made up of volunteers who, together with other community volunteers, are investing their time and energy in making this community a better place to live. Occasionally when we sell Memberships, (which cost only $35 per year) we hear comments such as "What do I get for my money" or "I don’t think I use anything the Community Association provides".

This is a short list of some of the things your Membership in Valley Ridge supports:

    A fund to be used for the financing of future community facilities or services and which will be based on community feedback and needs;
    The maintenance of the seasonal rink facility located near the Plazebo (utilities, fuel for the ice resurfacer, new shovels etc.);
    The spring community clean-up, the community garage sale, the annual BBQ, the skateboard park and the Park N’ Play Days;
    Annual insurance premiums to cover the liability of the many events and all community sports;
    The cost of our Volunteer Appreciation Night, which recognizes a group of individuals who are indispensable to the community;
    The cost of the VRCA Annual General Meeting and Special General Meetings. Our board members sit on a myriad of other associations and committees such as the Calgary West Special Places Committee, the Federation of Calgary Communities, etc., all of which enhance our community value and enable us to stay current on issues which may impact us;
    The casino for fundraising, open houses with respect to items of interest to the community such as the proposed Shape development, the Stoney Trail Interchange and the proposed South TransCanada Highway developments along the corridor.

The Community Associations acts as a liaison for the community and individual members with the golf course, our Councillor Ward Sutherland our Calgary Police Liaison Officer, the municipal government and the Province.

The other side of the coin is to imagine what Valley Ridge would be like without a strong and active Community Association. There would be no ice rink or soccer or t-ball programs, no park n' play programs or skateboard parks. There would be no LEAF or other beautification program, no revitalization of existing playgrounds and new playgrounds. There would be no organized casinos for facility maintenance and facility development. There would be no community voice at City development committees, acting to improve the quality of life in the whole community. There would be no BBQs or other social community events - such as the Cocktail Party and Dance. There would be no Halloween or Christmas decoration competitions or other community spirit events such as Music in the Garden. Valley Ridge would be bereft of spirit and would not be the attractive and engaging community it is today. We are very lucky to have the many dedicated volunteers we do have (and could use many more!) who keep the Community Association strong and engaged and vigilant. The result is a beautiful and vibrant community with many community spirit events and opportunities.

We think that there is a lot that your membership helps pay for, but we could do more. Should every household in Valley Ridge purchase a membership, the Community Association could enhance and produce more facilities and programs for all. We think that this is truly possible and hope that residents will show their support of this great community by purchasing their annual membership.

One of the many replies to why should you support your community association is to counter with "Why not?" What does the Community Association not do for you? There are so many tangible benefits that go beyond the soccer and t-ball programs - and it only costs $35 a year per household. We never want to know what your community would be like without the VRCA.
